Chemistry
The obstacle between elastomer protection and a shingled roof is chemical repulsion: a water-based (polar) acrylic rejects adhesion directly to an oil-based (non-polar) asphalt surface. SmarTcoaT solves this chemical incompatibility with an engineered two-stage bridge.
First, polymer-modified asphalt sealer penetrates the weathered shingle, utilizing mechanical interlocking and weak-force van der Waals bonds to fuse directly with the existing asphalt. As this base layer cures, its high-density mineral fillers (quartz and clay) and cross-linked polymers are exposed at the surface, creating a high-energy, "mineral-rich" matrix. When the acrylic elastomer top-coat is applied, its highly polar molecules form powerful hydrogen bonds directly with those exposed minerals. It doesn’t just sit on the roof—it chemically welds the acrylic shield to the asphalt core.
